Presentación Workshop SILE 2016 / presentation of ISEL Workshop 2016

The International Symposium for Educational Literacy (ISEL) invites to present and discuss the practical implications of research results on an international level, in the ISEL Workshop to be held in Santiago de Chile, to who are interested in the reading and writing success of pre-school and primary students.

Before this second version of the ISEL Workshop, two biennial International Symposiums on Educational Literacy have been held, one in Portugal (2013) and one in Canada (2015) and an intermediary scientific workshop event in the Czech Republic (2014). In all of them, researchers have presented and discussed research proposals focused on the ISEL thematic areas in regard to different aspects of learning and teaching of writing and reading from kindergarten until the end of primary school (prevention, learning disabilities, effects of different practices on learners, acquisitions, contribution of technology).

In this 2016 edition of the ISEL Workshop we are introducing for the first time the Latin American view of these thematic areas through the participation of several Latin American researchers. Latin American countries are characterized by their multiculturality and for having important social inequalities, which affects how children learn basic skills of literacy, numeracy and science.

Particularly, in literacy, we found that more than a third of the students in their first years of elementary education show important difficulties in reading and writing. These difficulties are even more severe in students of indigenous background, whom their first language is not Spanish, and also in children with learning difficulties.

Research in literacy is essential to contribute to the knowledge of how children learn in general and also in their particular sociocultural contexts. The exchange between researchers of Latin America, North America and Europe around these issues could be useful to develop more effective literacy practices, and also support the initial and continuous teacher training.

Conferencias / Keynotes:

During SILE workshop 2016, three invited speakers will give presentations:

Paul van den Broek is professor in Cognitive and Neurobiological Foundations of Learning and Teaching at Leiden University, the Netherlands, and director of the Brain and Education Lab. He obtained his PhD from the University of Chicago (1985), and was professor at the University of Kentucky (1985-1987) and the University of Minnesota (1987-2008) before moving to the Netherlands. His research interests center around reading, learning from texts, and mathematics. With his colleagues, he investigates the cognitive and neurological processes that underlie these activities –both when they succeed and when the fail-, and the development of these processes in children and adults. They also develop and test methods for improving reading comprehension and reading skills in struggling readers. http://www.brainandeducationlab.nl
