My research interests concern:
- Reading comprehension development.
- The relation between word reading and language comprehension in Spanish speakers.
- The predictors of reading comprehension, specially narrative skills. More specifically:
- The relation between production and comprehension
- What factors can foster narrative comprehension and production, e.g. Home Literacy practices.
- The relation between narrative performance and reading and listening comprehension.
- How different stimuli supports narrative performance
- What are the links between micro and macrostructure in narrative production.
I studied Psychology in the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, and then pursued a Master in Educational Psychology in the same institution. During my masters I become interested in early reading comprehension and the factors associated to its development. I decided to continue my PhD under the supervision of the Professor Kate Cain at Lancaster University, UK, where I studied the factors that underpins narrative skills and their relation to reading comprehension. After completing my doctoral studies I returned to Chile and started a postdoctoral position at CIAE where I´ve been based up to date. Currently I am an assistant professor of the institute of Education in Universidad the Chile. I continue investigating reading comprehension development, with focus on the early years. I´m keen on many subtopics about early reading comprehension, just to mention a couple: I am interested on how children organize discourse including not only narrative but also expository genres. In addition, I´m intrigued by the processes occurring during reading comprehension, especially what leads to good/poor comprehension.
